The mission of the Finnish Association for Mental Health, FAMH is to support and promote good mental health, considered essential at all levels of society and in all spheres of life.
Support and help for foreigners
The Finnish Association for Mental Health provides crisis assistance and support in order to prevent mental health problems and suicides.
Voluntary work for promoting mental health
The FAMH is a Finnish non-governmental organization and a federation of over 50 local mental health associations making part of it, hosting approximately 4 000 individual members.
Fear of interaction with people
Heikki remembers being timid already as a child and being scared of being the centre of attention at school and talking in front of others. Simply having to answer a question in class would make his heart race and his hands sweat.
The SOS Centre of the Finnish Association for Mental Health has worked in suicide prevention for almost 40 years. Based on past experiences, suicide can usually be prevented.

In everyday life, the word ‘depression’ may refer to many different things. The phenomenon becomes hard to understand as the word is used to describe both an emotion and a mental disorder.
Mental health services
In Finland, municipal authorities are responsible for organising mental health services. Mental health services are also provided by hospital districts, private service providers and third sector actors, i.e. different kinds of organisations.
A traumatic crisis is caused by a sudden, unexpected and intense incident. The event produces a significant emotional shock that temporarily overwhelms the individual. Traumatic crisis is a reaction to an event which threatens the essential aspects of life.
